A Bomb in February Samantha Rialto Mysteries Book 2 edition by Evan Katy Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I bought the first in this series because I have running out of series books to read! Since becoming a Stay at Home Mom I look for quick reads to occupy nap times and before bed times. I have read both the January and February additions in this series and can not wait for the next installment. I like how Samantha has had a bad past relationship but is not self-loather like so many women in romance novels. The plotlines are believable and Samantha is not the typical never listen to reason hard-headed heroine, but she still got a mind of her own- she is someone I imagine I would like in real life. I can't wait to see how the relationship between Samantha and Ben plays out!Just a note- I am not one of those reviewers/readers that focuses too much on the grammar or formatting of the Kindle. I actually haven't had any difficulty with my formatting. Also, I can easily believe almost any story line and am a hopeless romantic. I rely a lot on peoples reviews to let me know if I am going to enjoy a book or not and hope I have been a help to you

A Bomb in February Samantha Rialto Mysteries Book 2 edition by Evan Katy Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I loved the first book - both the mystery 'who done it' plot as well as the character development and relationship tensions between Samantha and Ben. However I was hesitant to get this second book since as I read the reviews and have read a few 'series' where the second or third book was a major let down after being sucked in with their first book. I must say, this was not the case - the mystery plot was great and had me guessing for most of the book. I also liked how the author developed the characters so that future books in the series can continue to have great character development vs being flat and predictable. I love that Samantha's character is deeper than just off the cuff quick witted phrases and relationship tensions with Ben.
Poor Sam, if March is anything like January (January Kills Me) and February, she's not destined for this world! Well, perhaps she is as she's got a whacky group of friends and family around her to save her from evil, and herself! First, Sam comes home to find her house demolished as a bomb across the street took out a neighbor. Then Maxie's new beau ends up shot, many times, and dies. Ben to the rescue, along with the Mother, Father, ex-husband and icky Skipper Turnbuckle. Industry espionage, crooked Senator...lots of great characters! If you haven't read the first in the series (January Kills Me) then start with that one; you need an intro to all the zany characters; but do read them. They are laugh-out-loud funny, in addition to having a mystery wrapped around the wackiness. Now I'm onto March (A Violet March).
I'm still not sure how I feel about Samantha, she's growing on me though. This is the second installment of the series and the plot/mystery was good. The romance was all but nil this time around and both Harry and Doug are annoying. Doug is kind of creepy, imo and a cardboard character. Harry. Considering what we know of him - a man who beat his wife regularly- I'm offended by any insinuations he's being kept in the "suitor stable."
I had trouble getting into this installment at first. Sam is deeper than ever in her pity party, but things picked up and once Maxie showed up things got interesting quickly. I liked it enough to go for the third book in the series - and that's saying something...most authors are unable to sustain what made the first book interesting. Evan Katy is getting better each book of the Samantha Rialto series IMHO.
2/8/14 UPDATE see review for third installment "A Violet March"
I just finished A Bomb in February and enjoyed every second of it. I could bearly put it down. This story takes place just a few weeks after January Kills Me concludes. While the characters are still reeling and recovering from the violence and chaos of January they are thrust into a whole new tornado of deceit, murder, and secrets.
Once again I have to admire the realistic development of the characters. Samantha is still scarred physically and emotionally from the horrors inflicted by Susie Linn and her mother yet she has to pull herself up by her boot straps when Maxie's tragedy explodes. I appreciate that Katy didn't give all her characters quick fixes and chose to show them recover and overcome their self doubts and fears. They are all stronger for this.
Sam and Ben's relationship is progressing in a logical, yet sweetly sexy, manner especially when they breakdown and are honest with each other. They need to sneak off on their own for a quiet vacation so they can work through their issues without a phone call or radio alert interrupting them. I want to see their slow sizzle hit full flame.
I liked that we met Sam's parents, Maxie's family, and at the end Ben's sister. I'm sure they will all add to the next installment Violet March. I can't wait.
A Bomb in February is the second Samantha Rialto mystery in the new series by Evan Katy. Samantha, barely recovered after the injuries sustained in the first book, is again at risk when her neighbor's house is incinerated and her own is damaged. Working with her old mentor, Turnbuckle, and her possible boyfriend, Ben, her best friend forever Maxie, and other characters from the first story, Samantha again experiences injury, kidnapping, explosions and confusion.
Will Ben, her former husband's former partner, be able to let go of his guilt for not realizing the abuse she sustained in her marriage? Will her ex-husband continue to pursue her forgiveness? Will her father, the retired chief of police, and her mother, distraught at her daughter's choice of companions and part time employment, offer her shelter without overruling her choices? And with all of this happening, will she be able to resume her career as a middle school music teacher, restoring the school's focus on learning beyond academics?
This book held my attention into the wee hours of the night. It is a mystery with many layers, driven by characters whose emotions are as complex as a Celtic knot. Evan Katy has created Samantha Rialto as a character who will last through many novels ahead, and I'm on board to read each one as it arrives.
